At Chaise & Lounge we are committed to providing you with everything you need to create the home of your dreams.  In addition to furnishings and decorative items, we carry some unique and beautiful lights and lightingfixtures.  Lighting is one of the most important aspects of a room’s design and it is also the most neglected. In terms of beauty and functionality, proper lighting of a room is a must. Without it, the most perfect design scheme can fall flat. If you understand the three types of lighting and their uses, you will be well on your way to mastering this art, and creating spaces that look and function beautifully.  Consider this your lighting 101.

Have you heard of layers of lighting?  Lighting layers refers to having different types of lights in a room to meet different needs.  The three types of lighting are ambient, task and decorative.  Ambient lighting refers to general room lighting. Ambient light can be provided by ceiling lighting, or fixtures or sconces that bounce light up to the ceiling.  Bouncing light off the ceiling is a good way to help light up dark corners. Task lighting is exactly what it says: light necessary to perform a task.  Examples are desk lamps, and lighting placed  under an upper kitchen cabinet to light the counter workspace.  Accent lighting is considered to be the room’s sparkling jewelry.  Accent lighting can be decorative lighting: chandeliers, pendants, sconces or table or floor lamps that provide glittery ambiance. Or it can be lights directed at a certain object to highlight it, such a a sculpture or other piece of artwork, or a plant, even a cherished furniture piece.

Unique Hand-Tufted Rugs

Chaise & Lounge website features a variety of beautiful wool carpets. Is there a difference between the terms “rug” and “carpets”? No, the words are used interchangeably. There is a difference, however, between hand-knotted and hand tufted. Hand-knotted is created by knotting yarn over warps. A hand-tufted rug is created by pushing wool or acrylic yarn through a primary backing, creating a ‘tuft’. A secondary foundation, called a scrim, is then applied. The rug maker uses a latex glue to hold the tufts in place. Then the scrim is covered by a third layer, which protects the floor. Lastly, the pile is created by shearing off the tops of the looped tufts. What determines the height of the pile is how much yarn is cut off, and how far up the initial loop was pushed up.

Hand-tufting is less time consuming than hand-tying, but a high level of craftsmanship is still required to create intricate designs. A pattern which is transferred onto the primary foundation shows the craftsman where to push though each colored tuft.

Because they can be made faster, hand tufted rugs are generally less expensive than hand knotted rugs. Hand tufting creates beautiful and durable rugs that last decades and hold up well to foot traffic. Some of the best rugs in today’s market are hand-tufted. Hand-tufting has been a huge revolution in the field of rug making.

Chaise & Lounge carries some of the most unique and beautiful designs and colors. You can call them for more traditional styles and colors but the ones on the website are usually styles that you do not see in other places. We have every pattern and color imaginable and a great rug can transform and complete a room. These rugs are hand made in India.
