Pampered Pooches-Presidential style

In this post election season, one thing we can all agree upon: the most beloved inhabitants of the White House have been the presidential pets. Speculation goes on as to what type of pet will be entering the White House with the new first family. We thought it would be fun to take a look back through history at our Presidential pooches.
George Washington had seven dogs, four black & tan coonhounds named Taster, Tipsy, Tipler and Drunkard-(hmm- wonder what they had in their water bowls?) and three Staghounds (SweetLips, Scentwell and Vulcan). John Adams had two dogs, Juno and Satan, breed unknown. Thomas Jeffersonhad two Briards; one was named Buzzy. James Monroe had a spaniel, and John Tyler had a French-named Italian greyhound name LeBeau. James Buchanan owned two dogs, a Newfoundler names Lara and a toy terrier named Punch. That brings us up to Abraham Lincoln, who had a dog named Fido (no joke). Ulysses S. Grantowned Rosie and Faithful, a Newfoundler. James Garfield’s detractors were probably not amused by his dog named Veto. Grover Cleveland had a poodle, and Benjamin Harrison had a Collie named Dash. Theodore Roosevelt governed with eight dogs in tow: Pete the bull terrier, Skip, a Rat Terrier, Blackjack, a Manchester Terrier, Manchu, a Peckinese, Rollo, the Saint Bernard, Sailor-”Boy, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and Gem and Susan (? breed). Woodrow Wilson had one Greyhound named Mountain Boy and a Bull Terrier named Bruce. FDR had 7: 2 scottish terriers, one German Sheperd, a Llewellyn Setter, an Old English Sheepdog, a Great Dane and a Mastiff. JFK had the most with nine: Charley the (Welsh Terrier), Shannon, the Irish Cocker Spaniel, Wolf & Pushinka, Mutts, Clipper the German Shepard, and and Charlie and Pushinka’s offspring: White Tips, Blackie and Streaker. Lyndon Johnson had 4 beagles,a white Collie and a mutt. Richard Nixon loved his four dogs, Checkers, the cocker Spaniel being the most famous. Ronald Regan had two purebreds: A Bouviern des Flandes named Lucky and a King Charles Spaniel named Rex. George H Bush had Millie, a Springer Spaniel, and Ranger, her pup. Bill Clinton had a chocolate Lab named Buddy, and George W Bush has three 3 dogs, Spot Fetcher who is Millie’s pup (a presidential dog dynasty?) and Miss Beasley and Barney, a pair of Scottish Terriers.
