Sculpture is a three dimensional work of of art.  It is created by joining or shaping a hard material, such as bronze, iron, stone, granite or glass.  There are a variety of techniques to creating sculpture.   They can be carved, assembled or built up, fired, cast, molded or welded. The artist who makes sculpture is known as a sculptor.   Sculpture is call free-standing sculpture, when it is surrounded by air on all sides, and is only attached at the base. It is also called sculpture in the round.  It is created so that it is beautiful when seen from any angle.  Another type if sculpture is relief- the sculpture is attached to the background, and it is meant to be viewed from the front. Types of relief are bas-relief, alto-relievo, and sunken-relief.  Another familiar type of sculpture is the statue, which represents a person,or persons, an event or animal, and is usually life sized, as opposed to a bust, in which the upper part of a person is represented, the face, neck,  and parts of the shoulders and chest.  A small statue is called a statuette, or figurine.
